Expo is a new website dedicated to exploring the world through culture.
In the 21st century, the world is more connected than ever. Our access to media and perspectives from across the globe has greatly expanded thanks to the internet. Traveling to distant lands is faster and less difficult than ever before.
Yet more and more, the transformative benefits of travel are increasingly locked behind borders, visas, and other arbitrary restrictions. Our insights are limited by corporate social media algorithms and misinformation.
Expo was originally conceptualized during the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel restrictions were at their max. In that time, when we were all locked in our homes, media became the only way to engage with the rest of the world. Through the internet, we can go traveling without moving.
In that spirit, Expo aims to become a gateway to global culture – a World’s Fair in the digital realm. With particular focus on culture from outside the U.S., the site will publish writing on film & TV, music, literature, animation, cuisine, interactive media, design and architecture, artists and creativity…and more. Eventually I plan to publish travel writing and guides that offer alternatives to algorithm-driven mass travel.
Culture offers a way to learn about what’s happening in the rest of the world without setting foot on a plane. Expo aims to be a different kind of travel publication, one that aims to harness the power of culture to expand our perspectives on the world.
Expo was founded by Doug Markowitz (that’s me!), a writer and journalist based in the U.S. He is currently the sole writer and editor of the publication.
The site is currently completely free to read during its soft-launch period; exclusive content will be offered for paying subscribers in the near future. If you like what you see so far, you can pledge to sign up for a paid subscription today and read exclusive content when the full site launches.
